On October 11th, 2021, artist Zhiying Hu presented his work "1+1+...=X" in front of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Combing installation and performance arts, "1+1+...=X" embodies the internal conflicts people experience when facing demises and sacrifices.

INSTALLATION:

Hu constructed a tall platform with simple yet unusual components: a black plastic pipe and black gasoline oil drums. The installation looks like a trail stand or a sacrificial altar, or something in between.

PERFORMANCE ART:

Part I

Covered in black fabrics, Hu crawled around the installation in circles, laying out the irony of human "progress" —— It is a hard, slow, and often awkward journey, during which mankind almost always unknowingly repeat the tragedy of self-contradictions. As the entire project is laid out in front of the audience, the installation and performance art intend to convey the idea that humans are constantly in a position of conflicts, helplessness and misfortunes. Hu takes advantage of the complexity of mixed media to conduct this art piece. He invited 2 cellists from the Orchestra of St. Luke's to play John Cage's "Living Room Music." Hu performance and the cellists' performance seem to be separated and unbothered by each other.

Part II

The artist interacted with the audience. Hu invited 3 audiences to participate in performing his art. The first participating audience wrapped Hu up from head to toes with duct tapes. Then, all three participating audiences took turns to talk to and try to feed the artist, whose mouth was sealed with duct tapes. This can be interpreted as the visualization of the human suffering of being forced to accept, yet, at the same time, not being able to obtain what they actually desire. Or, even when they are offered what they desire, it is often at a time when they are unable to accept the offerings. Mankind might never find out the answer to "1+1+...". The uncertainty of how the interactive art project would play out translates into the different ways its meaning can be perceived, just like the ambiguous condition’s humans are in —— the unknown number X.

The audience actively participates in the interaction. This is rare in avant-garde art. The photographer carefully took photos and made videos with a digital camera. Good clarity of photos and videos. Especially the production is very exquisite. The ideas of the whole project are very unique and valuable.
